Fit for a King (Part 2)
Continuing a long drawn out story about my club fitting and talking about the fear of changing my putter
You can read part one here.
For my wedges, Chris had me test a few different ones, quickly moving towards Cleveland and the Titleist Vokey wedges. There wasn’t a massive difference in performance when we got down to these two with my full wedge shots. It really came down to look and feel, and I felt when I hit shorter shots, I had a better “feel” with the Vokeys. I suck at chipping so who the hell knows.

Finally, we get to the putter. I don’t think there was one thing that I feared more than messing with my putter. I feel incredibly confident with my putter, as I demonstrated by dropping four eight-footers in a row when setting a baseline for my putting. I also did not want to be talked into a mallet or anything other than a blade. Why change my putter? You asked if I liked it, and it performed well. I bought the putter when the face of my beloved STX Putter fell off, and I had a golf tournament the next day; they didn’t have the length I wanted, so they put an extender in the handle. I feel like I have made do with it after rushing to purchase it from Dick’s and never really went through a process.
After determining what level of toe hang I needed, we tried a lot of face-balanced putters because it didn’t look like I needed a lot of toe hang based on my swing. The performance I had with the face-balanced putters was awful. We could see that without the toe hang, I began over-rotating on my swing and moving the face around enough to continually put me offline. We went back to a putter that had my current toe hang, and the performance improved. I narrowed it down to a Ping, Bettinardi, and Scotty putter, and the Scotty won out.

I took a ton of swings; we did start to look at the driver, but my swing speed was deteriorating at that point. The performance of the new drivers did not beat out my current Ping G410, which is only a few years old. We are going to revisit woods when I come back and pick up and dial in my irons. I’ll update you on how that goes.
