I’m a Medium (Grip)
I'll never be a medium shirt... so I should take where I can be a medium when I can
A few months ago, I had to get my clubs regripped. Apparently having indentations where you grip the club, specifically the edge of your palms is looked down upon.
It’s the first time I have ever had my clubs regripped, so I wanted to investigate different options and think my way through it a bit instead of just getting what I had before.
There are a few things to consider material, tack, style, and size. I knew that I need to avoid leather grips since I live in the Pacific Northwest and play in the rain often, that was also the reason why I went with a grip with a little more tack to them. Obviously, these were easy decisions.
Size though was where I put a lot of thought in. I tend to strangle the ever-living shit out of the club, like Homer Simpson choking Bart. While I have made a concerted effort to not do it anymore it still rears its head, and when I am strangling the club, I am playing tense which leads to more mistakes being made. While I am not a size queen, I considered some pretty thick (or thicccccc) grips to combat that, but they never felt comfortable. The medium (aka midsize) grip, while I can still strangle the club, was thicker enough for me to kind of notice allowing me to loosen up.
I’ve played with them for a few months now and I can’t say that there was an adjustment period because the grip changes also corresponded with me playing my best golf of the year. While I can’t attribute that to the grip change, I can say that it didn’t negatively impact me or make me feel like my swing was altered because of it.
So if you tend to strangle the club, changing your grip size might have a positive impact.
