As outlined in my post from August I have been dealing with injury. After being in a cast for months, going to PT, and spending an ungodly amount of money on CT scans and X-rays I can finally say, “I guess I can golf.”
The doctor cleared me to fully return to sports in December, I was pumped. He did tell me that I would not be fully healed until winter 2025 (if at all) and should continue to use my bone stimulator (insert joke here) and use pain and discomfort as my guide.
Because I also suffer from something called, “no chill”, I immediately started working out, hitting a shit ton of balls in the garage, playing ice hockey and holy shit did it begin to hurt. I shut myself down for a while again mostly just playing ice hockey and then began to reintroduce things one by one and altering them based on how it made me feel in mid February. Of course as soon as I began to ramp up a dermatologist discovered an abnormal mole on the back of my thigh and had to have it removed which put me on the shelf for a few weeks, yet again. I am back though and fully committed.
I’ve been taking lessons and hitting a small number of balls in my garage. I don’t know if I can sit there and hit a hundred balls off a mat anymore but what I can do is work on very distinct motions, take practice swings, and hit a few dozen balls with intent. I have been working with Andy Morris, and we have not only been working on my swing but also looking at reducing things that can harm my wrist (like you know, slowing my swing down instead of swinging the club like I am trying to stop an alligator from eating a small child). I’ll update you with what I have been working on in the coming weeks.
Also, I went and got an assessment at the Golf Gym to get a detailed workout program to improve my golf flexibility and strength. (More on that later). While I had to take a bit of time off from the weightlifting, I have continued with stretching and have begun my full workouts again.
I’ve played four rounds of golf this year, two last weekend where I played on back-to-back days along with four hockey games in three days in Palm Springs, I can report there is no pain or discomfort and showed some flashes of competency while shaking off the rust. (Also had two goals and three assists, no big deal.)
So, what I guess I am saying is….
Welcome back, champ.
