Okay nerds let’s look at the numbers part 2: Distances
How far do you I actually hit the ball?
Last year for my birthday I gave myself a little gift, a Rhapsodo launch monitor. When you combine that with my Garmin watch I should have some level of detail on how far I actually hit my clubs. So, I wanted to play a game, name the club and guess what I think I hit it. Then see what the data says.
Also doing this exercise allows me to set a baseline because I do want to increase my length.
I’ll do this exercise and see where I am at when we are done.
Club: Driver
What I think I hit: 245 yards
Rhapsodo: 205 yards
Garmin: 228 yards
—
Club: 3 Wood
What I think I hit: 240 yards
Rhapsodo: NA (no idea what is going on here)
Garmin: 191 yards
—
Club: 3 Hybrid
What I think I hit: 225 yards
Rhapsodo: 172 yards
Garmin: 178 yards
—
Club: 4 Iron (no longer in my bag, replaced by a driving iron)
What I think I hit: 210 yards
Rhapsodo: 165 yards
Garmin: 195 yards
—
Club: 5 Iron
What I think I hit: 200 yards
Rhapsodo: 141 yards
Garmin: 148 yards (I use this a lot to pitch low under things skewing the stats)
—
Club: 6 Iron
What I think I hit: 190 yards
Rhapsodo: NA (no idea what’s going on here)
Garmin: 173 yards
—
Club: 7 Iron
What I think I hit: 170 yards
Rhapsodo: 142 yards
Garmin: 162 yards
—
Club: 8 Iron
What I think I hit: 160 yards
Rhapsodo: 146 yards
Garmin: 146 yards
—
Club: 9 Iron
What I think I hit: 150 yards
Rhapsodo: 134 yards
Garmin: 139 yards
—
Club: PW
What I think I hit: 140 yards
Rhapsodo: 122 yards
Garmin: 136 yards
—
Club: UW
What I think I hit: 120 yards
Rhapsodo: 105 yards
Garmin: 117 yards
—
Club: 54 Degree Wedge
What I think I hit: 100 yards
Rhapsodo: 97 yards
Garmin: 73 yards
—
Club: 58 Degree Wedge
What I think I hit: 80 yards
Rhapsodo: 85 yards
Garmin: 47 yards
I think my Rhapsodo is WAY off. The driving range I usually hit on has a big drop-off after about 60 yards, which may be impacting how it tracks. I’m not sure. Maybe I need to recalibrate and investigate how I use this.
One thing for sure is even if the data isn’t 100% correct is that I overestimate how far I hit the ball. This is also backed up by the previous post about stats where I come up short 44% of the time.
I have a Rhapsodo as well and have a similar issue, shots come up ~10-20% short and it gets worse the bigger the club. I think part of the issue can be explained by the quality of range balls your practice facility uses though.
