Let’s take a quick look at where I am at in general here before we dive into the season:
The Health
We covered the injury update in the last post. In general, I without a doubt gained a few pounds being out (I was up to 234), I have dropped seven pounds since the start of the year but have a way to go. It’s something I am focusing on. Workouts and flexibility have been a on and off focus since the start of the year.
The Gear
I got fitted for irons/woods probably around 10-12 years ago, I got fitted for a driver about 3 or 4 years ago. I’ve never been fitted for a putter. (I have trepidations about that.) It’s safe to say I probably need new clubs. My irons are player improvement irons and really add way too much loft to my shot. While I don’t think getting new clubs is going to magically make me a better golfer, I do think my swing and numerous other things have changed including technology and it’s time to get something new. I have a fitting scheduled in a few weeks.
The Eye Test
Like I said on Monday, I have played four times this year. I played twice in January on back-to-back days and then the last weekend in March on back-to-back days. Both times I had one day over 100, and then a second day in the mid to upper 90s (which should be my high rounds, I should never be over 100). On one of the sub 100 rounds I had a run of 4 holes going 1 over par, and another three hole run going one over. It was the rest of the holes that were a disaster. I don’t think I am that far away from being in the high 80s and low 90s.
The Handicap
From a low of 15 I am all the way back up to a 23.3. Between playing with a messed-up knuckle at the of 2023 and basically being injured for any round I played in 2024 the numbers were awful. I am excited to be able to sandbag a little, take some people’s money, and then watch that bad boy drop.
The Feels
Really have been working on getting my weight forward in transition and my hands away from my body. The weight forward has come along, the hands away from my body is still a bit of a work in progress. I feel comfortable being out on the course with these as my main swing thoughts.
This week I play three rounds of golf, two in competitive formats. One is a two-person best ball on Thursday, a normal round on Friday, and then part of my league on Saturday. Not really working myself back into playing, more like diving in head first.
